My boyfriend is always telling me I need to watch more classic movies. Of course, his idea of what constitutes a classic is different than most. If its post-1975 and can be categorized as SciFi/Fantasy, he holds it in high esteem.* And while I do love those types of movies, I feel my exposure to fine cinema is woefully inadequate.
Wanting to remedy the gaping holes in my movie watching, I did what any bored twenty-something would do**: make a list of every Academy Award Best Picture Nominee and set out to watch them all.*** While I realize this is in no way a comprehensive list of classic American cinema, I figure it has to be a good place to start.
I look forward to re-discovering old favorites, and finding some new ones. Experiencing silent film-era movies, and singing along with musicals. Delving into westerns and war films (two genres I typically don't watch). Finally sitting through Gone With the Wind, and viewing Forrest Gump for the 500th time.
So let's get the popcorn and dim the lights. It's movie time.
*Especially Star Wars, which just happens to be on the list. Other "classics" he's made me watch that do not make this list: Aliens, Ghostbusters, Gremlins, Terminator, and Terminator 2. I enjoyed all of these except T2, which I found way too intense. For me, Schwarzenegger is best in small, comedic doses.
**This is what bored twenty-somethings do, right?
***Or as many as possible. More on that later.
